Welcome to the Classic Yacht Restoration GuildOur MissionThe Classic Yacht Restoration Guild (CYRG) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1982 by Richard Carrion. The CYRG's current project is the complete restoration of the oldest known small yacht in America, Elf, a 30-foot class wooden sailing yacht built by George F. Lawley & Sons in Boston, Massachusetts in 1888. Since Elf has been a continuous part of American maritime culture for over a century, her complete restoration to her original condition will fulfill a mission of history and cultural awareness in the Chesapeake Bay community. The Guild's mission at present is continuing education of those interested in boat restoration, under the direction of our Master Boatwright, Graham Ero. As the Guild moves toward Elf's launch date, the mission will expand to education in the art of seamanship and traditional boat handling. After launching, the Guild aims to employ Elf as a flagship for her port county and state from where she will be used to educate students and community members interested in maritime history, historical restoration techniques, seamanship, and tidewater ecology. Along the way, the Guild offered experience in the restoration as an accredited part of Maryland’s High School Student Service Learning Credit program. Elf's mission embraces an established tradition of giving back to the community that has provided a home and resources needed for its restoration.
